This is what getting old feels like. Probably.

Words words words after the break.

When I went to my dad's that weekend, my step-mom was throwing him a surprise party that he knew about a while before hand. Not really having any idea of what I would be doing for this, I asked my dad if I could borrow his camera, and I started filming whatever: Dad cooking (on his own birthday by the way,) his cat hiding inside the mattress, people warming up the garage with a propane grill, Shrek 2, just whatever I could find happening. The location I chose doesn't really factor into why I filmed there, it was the people there and what they were doing.

What I'm trying to convey with this is the feeling that older people describe of time speeding up for them, and everything getting all jumbled. The video starts up with only one clip, but it starts to zoom out as more clips pop in. With each new clip that appears, every other video speeds up. Soon, there are dozens of different clips all clipping into each other, and it becomes pretty much impossible to tell whats really going on. Then the clips all swirl and mix into an even more unintelligible mess and the video fades to white; all memories and time coming to an end.

The video ends with a clip of me annoying my dad. While he may at some point navel gaze about his own mortality, he isn't right now. He's living in the moment, as everyone should really. Sure, he forgets things, and months zoom by without him realizing. The same happens with other old people, if they are to be believed. That's just how life works; give no heed to your pendulum-like jowls and enjoy life while you still got it.

I didn't really have any problems with this, other than the fact that this took about 20 hours. The hardest decision I had to make was about the last clip: should I use the part where I'm annoying my dad, the part where he gets an empty memoir, or the part where he's having trouble reading his birthday card. That fade-to-white sound I made wasn't exactly what I wanted (I wanted this,) but its alright, I guess.

POST END, SON. POST END.

I'm drunk, you don't have an excuse.

The "'You don't have to do that, nick.' 'Yeah I do'" made me laugh.

  3. Nick, I will obviously speak/write more about your piece tomorrow but I wanted to say that I know you worked really hard on this and it shows. It is simply brilliant.

  4. Excellent effort on this piece, Nick. I especially enjoy the play between low-fi, amateur footage / sophisticated editing and animation….
